Some folks watching the Golden Globes last Sunday didn't quite get one of the night's one-liners. When Jennifer Lawrence took the stage to accept the trophy for Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical and blurted out, "Oh, what does it say? 'I beat Meryl!' " she didn't realize the wrath she would receive from people who had never seen the '90s girl power flick "First Wives Club," even after MTV News clarified the quip.
"It's never a good idea for me to wing it, but it was a quote from 'First Wives Club'!" the "Silver Linings Playbook" actress said on "Late Night with David Letterman" Tuesday night. "[In the movie] Bette Midler was talking about a Globe — I can't believe nobody has ever done it before — where she says, 'Look what it says, it says I beat Meryl.' "
Among the folks who didn't get the reference was Lindsay Lohan, who spent the evening live tweeting the Globes and bashed Lawrence's wisecrack on Twitter. "It was so perfect, and I said it," Lawrence said. "I had no idea that Lindsay Lohan would take it to the Twitterverse, is that what they call it? I'm not on Twitter, but Twitter is very upset."
"First of all, it's Meryl Streep. You can't offend Meryl Streep," Lawrence said further, joking that she wanted to use the show as platform to make public her beef with the superstar. "And then all of the sudden I hate Meryl Streep. Is that what this turned into? I don't like Meryl Streep? As if I had my eyes on getting that girl forever and I was like, 'Finally! I knew it would happen one day!' "
So, has Lawrence heard from Streep since it all went down? "No, I don't know if I want to. I'm nervous. She doesn't care. I wanted to make a public statement and say, 'Hey idiots. It's a quote from a movie,' " the "Hunger Games" star said. " 'And it's Meryl Streep.' God I wonder what Twitter's going to say now."
