Matthew Morrison has sung his heart out to other people's songs on "Glee," but for the season-two finale, he'll be belting out a ballad that's a bit closer to home.
The Hollywood Reporter has learned that Morrison will be performing a song off his self-titled debut album, out Tuesday, in the May 24 episode. He'll be performing the album's first single, "Still Got Tonight," which was penned by Kris Allen.
"[The song]'s about aspiration," show creator Ryan Murphy told THR. "It worked because we wanted to do a scene where Matt goes into a Broadway hall and sings something alone. Plus, Matt is such a great team player and he's done so much for different 'Glee' charities."
Murphy said that they did their best to make the song feel organic to the Fox television series, especially since Morrison's Mr. Schuester has always been a dreamer. Murphy added that he wanted to give Morrison a chance to show off his singing chops in the New York-set finale.
"It was going to be just a big dance piece with me doing this big dance number," Morrison said in the interview. "But they said, 'We want you to sing it and make it a big moment.' "
The episode promises plenty of other excitement beyond just Morrison singing his own song on the show for the first time. Co-star Chris Colfer told MTV News that both his and Lea Michele's characters will be visiting some famous New York landmarks in the finale.
"We're in New York so we have a huge New York episode coming up, and I think fans of my character and Rachel will love where we sneak into in the episode," Colfer said, "It's a wicked location."
