Robert Pattinson had no problem working alongside an elephant, being lifted up into the creature's mouth and improvising with her on take after take. He did, however, have a lot of trouble working with "Water for Elephants" co-star Reese Witherspoon, at least when it came time to dance.
"That was the one bit I was most nervous about because there are tons of extras who are really good dancers, and they're all doing the Charleston. And Reese is a really great dancer," Pattinson laughed during a recent MTV News interview. "Reese said she couldn't even do the practice with me, so she did the practice with the dance teacher."
But when we asked Witherspoon herself if Pattinson was truly an awful dancer, she quickly responded, "No, that's not true!" "As dancers go, I wouldn't say it's his forte," she explained to us rather gently. "I wouldn't say it's his favorite thing, but it actually ended up turning out really well in the movie. We had some doubts about whether we could pull it off."
Is she covering for her co-star or was Pattinson perhaps being a bit self-deprecating about his toe-tapping abilities? Perhaps we'll find out during our "Water for Elephants" live stream from the red carpet premiere at Sunday (April 17) at 5 p.m. on MTV.com. For now, we'll simply add that Reese claimed to us, "I'm not the greatest dancer either," and went on to suggest that she too clashed a bit with their dance instructor.
"We had a very enthusiastic coach, who really wanted us to make it right," she laughed. "I was like, 'This is not 'Dancing With the Stars!' "
In the end, though, both actors agreed that the dance sequence in question turned out quite well. "It looks all right," Pattison said. "It's weird. I don't know how that happened."
