Thursday night's elimination of presumed "American Idol" frontrunner Pia Toscano has already been called "the most shocking" early exit in the show's 10-year history, and, somewhat accordingly, the response has been apoplectic, to say the least.

It seems that everywhere you looked — from the in-house "Idol" reaction immediately following the news to the ripples it created in the celeb-o-sphere — people are just plain pissed by Pia's elimination, and nowhere was that more apparent that in the comments that were left by "Idol" fans on MTV.com.

We were flooded with messages from readers, most of whom were so outraged by Toscano's departure that they swore they'd never watch "Idol" again. Others floated vast voting conspiracies, wondered aloud why "lesser" contestants like Stefano Langone and Paul McDonald remained in the competition, promised to support Toscano wherever she goes from here and expressed shame for their fellow countrymen. Of course, there were some who weren't all that shocked by her elimination, and they were more than willing to explain why.

The debate was so lively that we've decided to feature some of it here: actual comments from actual readers about Toscano, "Idol" voting and just where the show goes from here. And if you still haven't had your voice heard, you can sound off in the comments section below. Now, let's get to the vitriol!

"OMG I cannot believe this. We've seen a lot of incredibly talented contestants and now we are letting Pia go. She was by far the most-talented, vocally speaking, and what have we done America? Don't you see that we need talented people? ... The show producers should do something about those crazy teenagers that vote without seeing talent. Really disappointed." — Andrea

"I am so furious with the outcome! I loved Pia and thought she was going to be the next Carrie Underwood. She was the whole package!" — Susan

"You know, I agree that she has mad talent but, seriously?!? It all comes down to song choice. She picked a song that, while it may have had meaning for her, when it was originally released in 1966 never made it higher than #88 on the U.S. charts. Personally, I had never heard the song before last night so I didn't bother even considering her performance ... if you choose a little-known song that went practically nowhere when it was first released then you deserve to go home!" — Jesse

"This is the last time I will ever watch 'A.I.' You have nothing but a bunch of young females voting and wouldn't know talent if it hit them in the face. Only males or today's music is noticed. Looks fixed to me: a shocker just for rating's sake. When the judges and fellow singers are upset, you have a problem. I will actively campaign to stop people [from] watching. Looks more and more like a set-up to get ratings." — Phyllis

"Pia Toscano: beautiful, poised, fantastic voice ... boring. Would I buy her music? Yes. Would I listen to her on the radio? Yes. Would I go see her in concert? Probably not. She will have a following for sure but for me I want to be entertained and that means more than just looking good and sounding good. Maybe if given the chance that would have panned out, but for now we won't know until this is all over. Fans aren't idiotic, this is entertainment television at its best. You'll keep watching because you'll want to know who's next." — Groove Sensei

"I can't believe that I'm an American and my fellow human beings would vote off such a talented individual. I'm so upset, I actually cried. This is absolute craziness and I have to live with not watching Pia go all the way. Just for the record, I told my sister that she would be the winner this year, even though I really like a lot of other contestants. This is unspeakably wrong." — Jen

"As some people on here have said, Pia is an amazing singer and very beautiful. However, the ballads are boring and I certainly would never pay to see her sing on stage because she has no movement and I'm not a fan of Celine Dion or Barbra Streisand. This is another case of 'Oh, she's safe, I'll vote for someone else!' Second point, to those who say that the judges used the save too early, should Casey have been voted off over Stefano that week? No. That is why they used their save. They never would have thought Pia would be voted off this early. IMHO, Pia was almost too cocky." — Vinnie

"What a joke, the best singer gets eliminated. I won't even watch the show anymore. It was bad enough when Kris Allen won that year but this tops [that]. They shouldn't have wasted that save on Casey. Jacob should have went, yeah he can sing but I am tired of his drama and the crying whimpering sounds he makes. Honestly Pia will have a record deal before you know it. She will most likely become the most successful person ever voted off." — Soliander

"Pia's by far the most gifted vocally. I'm sure she's been signed already to a multi-record deal where she gets next-to-no money. Oh, sorry you lost, now here's a one-time-only deal to sign ... aren't you psyched! 'Idol's' a joke and any remaining credibility it had has gone with this." — Iham

"I love J.Lo and Randy and Steven Tyler, but, come on, judges, do your job! Be critical when [the contestants] aren't so good. That's why I miss Simon ... he would just tell them if they weren't good. ... This is a competition! You can't be nice all the time." — Susie Q
