Chuckie, the DJ/producer behind "dirty Dutch" house hits like "Let the Bass Kick" and the popular remix of David Guetta and Akon's "Sexy Bitch," is among the growing list of electronic dance music hitmakers exporting their brand of "unst-unst" to the States. But he'll make his mark Stateside in a big way as he joins Paul Oakenfold's Facelift Tour this fall.
With a tour schedule that includes more than 50 club dates, famed veteran DJ/producer Oakenfold will lead sets, along with Chuckie, Calvin Harris, DJs/ songwriting sisters Nervo, Sydney Sampson, Roger Sanchez and others.
Chuckie has had acts as diverse as LMFAO, Jermaine Dupri and Lil Jon jump on remixes of "Let the Bass Kick," while his version (with Lil Jon) of "Sexy Bitch" is a dance-floor burner. When MTV News caught up with the Dutch native last week, he was beaming in anticipation of the upcoming tour and the opportunity to share the stage with a star-studded crew.
"It's pretty exciting because in dance music, you know, you have these names that are up there — Carl Cox, Pete Tong, Paul Oakenfold, Tiësto, Armin [van Buuren] — these guys been killing it for years," Chuckie said. "To me, it's exciting to be on tour with Paul Oakenfold. It's my first time going on a tour and going to places like Albuquerque — places I never been to."
For the Facelift Tour, Oakenfold appears to have assembled a star-packed EDM roster that aims to deliver some unique flavors. Compared to Oakenfold's cool, collected progressive house/trance sound, Chuckie's is high-energy electro-house, a fact that he admits made him surprised to get the call from Oakenfold.
"He called me. He said, 'Listen, I'm gonna check you out.' I was in L.A. doing this Dim Mak party with Steve Aoki. I'm like, 'Oh, this is not the place he needs to be seeing me,' because I am going to play crazy records. I'm going to crowd surf, so it's totally the opposite of what he does. He came down and he was like, 'Let's see what you do.'
"So I just went crazy and he was like, 'I actually love it,' " Chuckie recalled. "And I'm like, 'Really? Really?' because the way I see him he's relaxed and he's playing the more serious house music, and I'm more like the big joker trying to have fun in the DJ booth. And then my agent calls me and was like, 'He wants you on tour with him.' I asked him, 'What do you want me to do?' and he said, 'Just do Chuckie.' So that's what I am going to do."
