The sudden death of Type O Negative frontman Peter Steele has sent shockwaves through the metal community. The imposing, deep-voiced frontman for the Brooklyn goth-metal favorites left an impression not only on his bandmates and contemporaries, but also on his fans and followers, many of whom stormed the Web to express their sorrow and share memories.
"I love Peter. He was so unique," commenter Deborah wrote on MTV.com. "I loved his lyrics to his songs. I loved his sense of humor. He was so down to earth with his all fans."
Dan, another commenter, recognized Steele's passion and said it came through his music. "Peter Steele changed my life. His tall frame and massive build was not what defined him; it was his voice and his passion for his music," he wrote. "Type O Negative moved me in ways no music ever has. Peter Steele will be deeply missed, but his music will live on in my soul." Many more fans noted how profoundly Type O Negative's music had affected them. "I'm simply devastated," Cristal wrote. "It amazes me how much someone you've never met can come to mean to you through music. His voice pulled me through the darkest of days, helped me deal with losing loved ones, help[ing] me find humor in the death of my marriage. It was an honor to be amazed and entertained by him."
Commenter Joseph took it a step further, recalling the opportunity he had to meet the late Steele: "I was lucky enough to meet Peter a couple of years ago outside Lupo's in Providence during the Jägermeister tour," he wrote. "He was so funny, and easy to talk to. I was happy to find out he's cleaned up and rediscovered his faith."
Megan also had a personal remembrance of Steele. "I knew Peter back in the day and from day one he was always kind, witty and always someone who inspired me with his lyrics and songwriting," she wrote. "He's a genius, an old friend, and I will love and miss him all the rest of the days of my own life."
Commenter Patrick summed up his grief simply: "There's no musician I'll ever miss more," he wrote.
