It seems that opening for Lady Gaga has readied Jason Derülo for his close-up. Derülo will make his film debut in the MTV movie "Turn the Beat Around," in which he will play a pop star looking for the next great dancer to join his dance crew. The film premieres Friday, February 26, at 10 p.m. ET on MTV.

The singer — who recently toured with Lady Gaga and whose self-titled debut LP comes out on March 2 — shared with us how eager he is to show off his acting chops. "I'm super, super excited about it. I'm so glad that MTV asked me to be a part of it," he said, adding that the film showcases his singing and dancing skills as well. "It's a dance movie. It's a lot of high-energy dance and it's a great time."

Derülo has never acted professionally and while the role isn't much of a stretch, he still feels he can do it justice. "My role in this movie is I'm the pop star in the film — they're auditioning for my video and all that stuff," he explained. "This is my foray into acting and I'm really excited 'cause I've been acting my entire life. So I mean, I definitely want people to get to know that side of me because I feel like my acting will take precedent at some point. My music is obviously the forefront right now, but I'm as much an actor as I am a singer."

Derülo will release his debut album this spring and admits that he hopes people don't think he's acting in this flick just because he can. "It's a blessing. It's awesome, man," he said. "I don't want people to think I'm one of those singers who's just doing acting 'cause I can. I can stand my ground as an actor — if I only had one talent and acting was it, I think I could do well for myself."

With "Turn the Beat Around" only weeks away from being released, Derülo is already plotting out his Hollywood takeover. "The roles that I would like to continue to do or the path of my career I would like to take if I model my acting career behind anyone's, it would be Will Smith," he said. "I think he's done a great job of choosing the right movies. That would be awesome."

"Turn the Beat Around" premieres Friday, February 26, at 10 p.m. ET on MTV.
