A statement released to MTV News by police said they responded to a call about a shooting at around 8 a.m. on New Year's Day at Stewart's home in Hampton, Georgia. Police said Stewart was involved in a dispute at his home with an "acquaintance," a 35 year-old man named Damon Martin of Detroit. The confrontation turned physical and Stewart shot and killed Martin, according to the report.
Stewart appeared in court on Saturday but appeared without his attorney, and he was granted another hearing to allow him legal representation. That hearing is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. on January 12, and he will remain in custody until then.
Police spokesperson Captain Jason Bolton told MTV News that Stewart himself called 911 to alert police about the shooting. Bolton also said Stewart was arrested a few hours later at police headquarters after more questioning by detectives.
Reps for the producer were unavailable for comment at press time.
