The clip features MJ running through a rendition of "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin',' " a classic single off his multi-platinum album Thriller and just one of the tracks he planned to perform during his London comeback concerts. Outfitted in red pants and a silver tuxedo jacket, the singer begins largely in silence, tapping his foot to an unheard beat before shooting out his hand in that unmistakable style of his.
The music then kicks in and you realize the song has actually picked up toward its end. "If you can't feed your baby/ Then don't have a baby," he sings. "And don't think maybe/ If you can't feed your baby."
While Jackson sings, he saunters across the stage, swinging his arms and pumping his legs. Behind him, singers provide backup vocals and pull coordinated dance moves. The clip that morphs to a split screen as MJ — this time in a '70s-inspired butterfly collar reminiscent of his days with the Jackson 5 — pulls a sort of sideways Moonwalk.
This isn't the first time MTV has debuted exclusive "This Is It" footage. During the Video Music Awards, we unveiled the doc's first trailer, which featured snippets of live performances of tunes like "Billie Jean," "Smooth Criminal," "Bad," "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'," and "Man in the Mirror." With glimpses at the elaborate sets built for the concerts, the acrobatic moves of his backup dancers and MJ's competent beatboxing skills, it was an impressive showing.
As the King of Pop himself said during the trailer, "I want to show them talent like they've never seen before."
