A Nevada court has recommended that a bench warrant be issued for Dr. Conrad Murray — the cardiologist at the center of the Michael Jackson murder investigation — over more than $13,000 in unpaid child support.
According to the assistant for Clark County Family Court District Attorney David Roger, Murray has until Wednesday to appear in Las Vegas court to answer the charges; if he does not appear before that date, a bench warrant will be issued for his arrest. If Murray does appear and objects to the warrant, a new date will be put on the calendar for the hearing on the child-support matter. As of September 17, Murray was reported to be $13,311.47 in arrears in support payments to former girlfriend Nenita Malibiran, who now lives in California with the couple's 10-year-old son.
It's just the latest legal entanglement for Murray, the focus of the investigation into Jackson's death from an overdose of the surgical anesthetic propofol in June. According to TMZ, police are scheduled to wrap up their investigation into the singer's death next week and hand the case over to the district attorney's office. Murray is the prime suspect and has told police he administered propofol and two other sedatives to Jackson in the hours before the pop star's death on June 25.
The Las Vegas Review-Journal reported that county prosecutors have been after Murray in the child-support case since February 2002, when a lien was filed against him for unpaid child support. He was reportedly the subject of another lien in 2006 for nearly $3,100 in unpaid child support. Roger told the paper that because of Murray's history of unpaid support — he has reportedly fathered at least seven children with six different women — his office will ask the Nevada medical board to suspend Murray's medical license if the case is not resolved.
"It's rare that we have to petition to suspend a person's professional license, but it is an option we have, and we'll exercise that option," Roger said.
In addition to the child-support issues, the paper reported that Murray has also defaulted on the mortgage for his Las Vegas home and owes $71,332 in unpaid student loans for medical school and more than $363,700 in judgments from lawsuits against him or his businesses.
A spokesperson for Murray could not be reached for comment at press time.
