POMONA, California — Hayley Williams' voice may have failed her during the Tuesday night kickoff of Paramore's Brand New Eyes tour, but that didn't dampen the enthusiasm of the sold-out crowd one bit — if anything, it made the show better.
Because as they came streaming out of the Fox Theater, covered in sweat and with voices hoarse, Paramore fans could truly say that they were a part of the show — and that, when Williams' voice faltered during the encore (which forced the rest of the band to tear though a version of their hit "Misery Business" with the fans providing the vocals), they were there to help pick up the slack.
"Hayley lost her voice and so, during the encore, we sang for her," fan Siara Martinez told MTV News outside the Fox. "I sang my heart out."
"I feel like it was us giving a tribute to her ... just singing to her," Lanette Poullard added. "And even though she lost her voice — and I hope she gets better — it was fun to sing out loud. It felt great."
And that sentiment was echoed by every Paramore fan we spoke to outside the show. To them, Williams' vocal problems weren't disastrous or distracting — they were magical. They helped turn the show into something legendary, and the sweaty, packed-to-the-rafters Fox into something resembling a (very sweaty) community.
"This was the first Paramore concert that I've been to, and I want to go to another one," fan Tom Higdon said. "The energy that the crowd gave off, even though Hayley couldn't finish the concert, the loyalty the fans have to the band and to each other, it was great to see."
"It was amazing ... and I think this album is a little bit more serious, a little slower than the last one ... it's more meaningful to Hayley," Kalynn Greeley said. "You can tell in her lyrics and the way she was trying tonight that she put a lot of thought and heart and emotion into it."
And while the overall vibe was overwhelmingly flowery, this was a rock concert — and as such, it wasn't all group sing-alongs. There was some honest-to-goodness pit action too, which was a whole different kind of good time.
"The show was cool. I got my neck cracked by some 400-pound dude. He fell on top of me. I kicked him in the ribs though. It felt good. I got some punches in there too," fan Cristal Mejia laughed. "At the end, I didn't hear what happened to Hayley, [because] I was looking for the guy who fell on me, to punch him in the face ... but it was worth it."
