John "Fabolous" Jackson, you're looking huge out there! A #1 album with critics and fans saying that they aren't mad at your Loso's Way — Fab is having, well, a fab moment. Talk about a Hottest MC — Loso is hitting the MTV News Hip-Hop Brain Trust's criteria with ease.
Impact and buzz: If his music doesn't keep the people talking, then his hilarious tweets might. He also struck an endorsement deal with Reebok. Sales? He has a #1 album this year. As for flow and lyrics, they shouldn't even be debated for the guy at this point.
But when it comes to pure lyrics, even though Fab is one of the most commercially viable dudes in the game, he can still spit better than most underground mixtape artists. His placement leading up to Loso's Way was damn near brilliant. He stayed with his niche, jumping on a mixture of R&B and rap tunes that the radio and clubs loved: Ryan Leslie's "Addicted," Ne-Yo's "She Got Her Own," Slim's "Good Lovin'," Lil Wayne's "You Ain't Got Nuthin'." Can anyone say "beasting"?
"I like both elements," Fab told us recently. "The R&B element, to me, is a little bit easier. But at the same time, I take my time with it. I feel I'm my biggest critic. I feel the whole world is listening, even though it may be a small amount listening. I feel everybody is gonna hear it. So I take my time and put my thing on it.
"With rap," he continued, "I'm such a fan of hip-hop, I love it when somebody else is dope. I love the chance to go up against other rappers ... I'm not one of them dudes whenever you hear the verse and you're gonna be like, 'Ah, this dude said some ABC on my sh--.' You're gonna feel like I feel, like, 'Fab really went in on this joint.' I feel that's what's kept me relevant."
With his own records, the "Throw It in the Bag" remix and "Money Goes, Honey Stays" are monsters on the dance floors right now.
" 'Throw it in the Bag,' the remix and original version, the chicks go crazy when they come on," DJ Infamous told us. "They love Fab in the club. The chicks go crazy. 'Money Goes' — that's so smooth and hard, you can play it in the more grown clubs or for the young and sexy crowd. The other song he has with Keri Hilson, 'Everything, Everyday, Everywhere,' that's another one that the chicks like. Fab is catering to the chicks, but the fellas are loving it as well. The girls dance to it, that's what keeps the party moving when the chicks move."
So the biggest question with Fab: Are there 10 other MCs out there who are putting the package together as well or at a higher level than him, or will he finally be able to crack the top 10?
Who do you think is the Hottest MC in the Game? Don't forget to vote from now through September 21 to have your voice heard.
