Chris Brown's mother, Joyce Hawkins, said she was "totally shocked" and "upset" when her son confided to her that he had been involved in a physical altercation with his former girlfriend, Rihanna.
Hawkins told CNN's Larry King that her son never had a history of violence, nor had she ever been contacted over issues concerning his behavior.
"He came and he actually spoke to me about what happened and I was totally shocked," Hawkins said in the interview that's set to air Wednesday night (September 2). "[I was] totally upset about the situation because I know Chris has never, ever been a violent person, ever. Throughout the entire time, even in high school, I've never been called about anything. Never."
The clip is the latest to be released from the interview conducted between King, Brown, his mother and the singer's attorney.
The interview will feature Brown's first extended comments since the February incident, in which he punched and bit Rihanna leaving her bloody and with scratch marks before he abandoned her in his rented Lamborghini, according to the police report.
Brown's mother has been by her son's side throughout the ordeal as she attended a number of court dates and took to Brown's fan site to offer thanks to supporters. In the King interview she opens up about being involved in her own abusive relationship.
In clips posted on CNN's Web site, Hawkins is visibly teary as she recounts to King her history with Brown's stepfather.
In past interviews, with MTV News and Giant magazine, Brown has been outspoken against his former stepfather's physically abusive behavior.
When King asked the singer's mother if perhaps her previous relationship could have led to Brown's behavior, she briefly nodded her head before being overtaken by emotion. Hawkins said the image of Rihanna bruised and battered left her bothered. She said she cared about the "Umbrella" star.
"When I saw it, I was really hurt. I didn't know if it was altered either, so it really bothered me," Hawkins said. " 'Cause I really care about her and my son."
