In April, amateur Scottish singer Susan Boyle exploded onto the world stage as a contestant on "Britain's Got Talent," then seemingly imploded in the days before her final performance. Tabloid reports suggested a meltdown, and the British voting public awarded a dance troupe the talent competition's top prize. But now Boyle's second act is about to begin.
In her first televised interview since her surprising second-place finish, Boyle taped an interview with Meredith Vieira of "Today," discussing her meteoric rise, her brand-new makeover and the album she's currently recording.
"It's just been unbelievable," the 48-year-old said in an excerpt from the interview, which will air on Wednesday. "It's indescribable. Being plucked from obscurity is a bit like going on a long journey, really. You don't know what's going to happen. You don't know how it's going to end."
Boyle raised eyebrows when she was reportedly admitted to a mental-health facility following the "Britain's Got Talent" finale. In the weeks after her release, the singer skipped several shows during the "BGT" concert tour. But when she did appear, crowds greeted her with rapturous applause as she performed faves from her TV appearances, "I Dreamed a Dream" from "Les Misérables" and "Memory" from "Cats."
Debuting a shorter, chestnut-brown hairstyle and wearing a knee-length purple dress, Boyle thanked Vieira for a compliment about her new look. "I brush up quite well," she laughed.
The singer is currently recording her first album and shot a photo spread for Harper's Bazaar. As she settles into her fame, Boyle said she couldn't be happier.
"I don't want it to end," she told Vieira. "It's just really good."
