The Box-Office Top Five
#1 "Brüno" ($30.4 million)
#2 "Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs" ($28.5 million)
#3 "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" ($24.2 million)
#4 "Public Enemies" ($14.1 million)
#5 "The Proposal" ($10.5 million)
The flamboyant Austrian fashionista Brüno strutted his way to the top this weekend, making a splashy $30.4 million debut.
Fox's teenage comedy
The top five finally said goodbye to "The Hangover," but with a drop of only 12 percent and a cumulative of $222.4 million, it hasn't quite worn off. Though they saw steeper drops than the ribald Vegas comedy, "Public Enemies" and "The Proposal" hung on with $14.1 million and $10.5 million.
On the limited-release front, Samuel Goldwyn/ Destination opened their horror film "Blood: The Last Vampire" in just 20 theaters to suck up a solid $103,000. Two high-profile independents earned expansion: SPC expanded Duncan Jones' sci-fi thriller "Moon" to 247 venues, and grossed $721,340, with a $1.8 million cumulative so far. And Summit Entertainment added Kathryn Bigelow's Iraq War drama "The Hurt Locker" to 50 theaters, grossing $603,000 and a cumulative of $1.1 million. One single Canadian venue snagged the film $20,000. So, while the top 10 blockbusters saw a 5 percent decline over last year, the indie scene is clearly thriving even in the quieter weekends.
Upcoming Releases
Warner Bros' "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" is the lone film on the horizon, and goes wide on Wednesday.
