Michael Jackson won his first Grammy Award in 1979: Best R&B Vocal Performance for "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough," a single from his solo debut, Off the Wall. Over the next two decades, he would win 12 more awards, including Album of the Year (Thriller), Record of the Year ("Beat It") and song of the year ("We Are the World").
It's not surprising, then, that the Grammy Museum in downtown Los Angeles houses an impressive collection of iconic MJ memorabilia from throughout the pop singer's career and is currently staging a special exhibit of his wardrobe pieces and video of his Grammy performances. But as chief curator Ken Luftig Viste explained to MTV News, the museum's staff was in the middle of resetting some of the items for an entirely different exhibit the day before Jackson's death.
"It was really odd timing for us, because we were pulling some of these down from a separate display we had them in on Wednesday night, the night before Michael Jackson passed away," said Viste, who quickly regrouped and launched the new MJ-focused exhibit by the Friday after Jackon's death.
The collection includes the white jacket Jackson wore on the cover of Thriller and several of his flashy single gloves. Also on display are four of his military-style jackets — red and gold, blue and gold, turquoise and silver — several of which were designed by Bill Whitten.
"Some of them actually have his name on a little tag in the back, like if you went to summer camp," said Viste, who added that one of the bejeweled jackets weighs almost 15 pounds.
The special exhibit, called "Michael Jackson: HIStyle," features some of the outfits he wore during the Jackson 5's Victory tour in 1984, and the outfits he wore at 1984's American Music Awards and at the dedication of his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
MTV's live coverage of the Michael Jackson public memorial service at the Staples Center in Los Angeles will begin on Tuesday at 12 p.m. ET/ 9 a.m. PT.
