"Death to synthesizers too. Death to guitar picks," Will.I.Am joked to MTV News at their album-release party in New York. "Death to Smoochy. Death to Slurpees."
All joking aside, Will said he gets the point that Jay-Z was making. "That's cool. I understand his point," he said. "I haven't been to New York in a long time, and here I turn on [radio station] Hot 97 and every single song on Hot 97's Auto-Tuned out."
But just because you're hearing a lot of songs with Auto-Tune doesn't mean that Will is going to abandon it anytime soon. "It ain't like I'm afraid of Auto-Tune," he explained. "I like it, but too much Auto-Tune is mad weird."
And the group's resident lady, Fergie, agrees with that sentiment, adding that when the group went into the studio for The E.N.D., she warned the guys not to go too overboard with the Auto-Tune. "I remember coming into the studio one day and was like, 'We're on this electro tip. It's crazy. ... Just please don't put Auto-Tune on every song I sing so that you can't recognize that it's me, or us."
So Will.I.Am used the processor like "sprinkles." "He really did it tastefully," Fergie said. "It's like at the end of a sentence, and when you see us live, it's a different thing."
