It's comforting to know that, despite a four-and-a-half-year layoff, the guys in
And that was abundantly clear during their appearance Monday morning (May 18) on KROQ's Kevin & Bean show, where they discussed their reunion, fielded calls about their upcoming tour and, uh, dissected the finer points of their onstage banter during Thursday night's surprise show in Hollywood.
"I need to apologize. For the past few years I've been doing this serious stuff," guitarist/singer Tom DeLonge joked, presumably about his other band, Angels & Airwaves. "And then the first song we come out and play, and I come right out and ask people if they masturbate to the 'Lord of the Rings' ... it was crazy."
It was indeed. And it was also somewhat reassuring — clearly the Blink of old hasn't gone anywhere. And in keeping with the vibe of reassurance, DeLonge and bassist/singer Mark Hoppus also addressed the rumors that their reunion got off to a rocky start on Grammy night ... rumors based largely on DeLonge's rather standoffish body language.
"Let me address this ... here's what happened. We show up at the Grammys, Travis [Barker] and I were there an hour before we're supposed to go on ... [and] they sent Tom a car for him that never showed up," Hoppus said. "So, he's not there, and literally the lady was like, 'If you don't have a full band in 30 seconds, we're cutting you from the show.' And, like, Tom walks in, they send us to a holding area and then it's like, 'Go!'
"And then we walk out there, and there's no podium, no microphone — nothing," Hoppus continued. "I'm walking around looking at camerapeople for help. I almost walked into the microphone, which is like a Bob Barker microphone ... we were backstage hugging and high-fiving, and then we go out there and we have no idea what we're doing. We were like deer in the headlights."
"I think people thought we were like the crew dudes," DeLonge laughed. "People were confused."
With that cleared up, Blink moved on to taking caller suggestions for the title of their upcoming summer tour (which DeLonge has already promised will include "lasers.") And, in keeping with the tradition of their Poo-Poo Pee-Pee and Race Around Uranus Tours, it looks like they found a winner: One-Way Ticket to Boneville.
"We've had some good names in the past ... 'Poo-Poo Pee-Pee,' 'Race Around Uranus,' that one tour where we had the F-word written in flames," Hoppus laughed. "But I kind of like 'One-Way Ticket to Boneville.' I don't know if anything's gonna top that."
