The Box-Office Top Five

This weekend proved you should never underestimate Beyoncé's ability to draw a crowd. The stalker thriller "Obsessed" took the #1 spot at the box office, exceeding expectations by bringing in $28.5 million. It would seem audiences still love a good fatal attraction, especially if it promises a vicious catfight.

Girl-on-girl fighting proved a little more profitable than boy-on-boy. Despite the promise of a shirtless Channing Tatum, "Fighting" couldn't quite slug it out against Beyoncé, Ali Larter or Zac Efron, but it debuted at #3 with $11.4 million.

Joe Wright's delayed drama "The Soloist" managed to make the top five, but it had a soft debut, particularly considering the one-two punch of Robert Downey Jr. and Jamie Foxx. It came in at #4 with $9.7 million.

But the environmental spirit was with "Earth," as audiences flocked to celebrate Earth Day with the documentary, possibly boosted by Disney's promise to plant trees for every ticket sold. It debuted on Wednesday and brought in $8.6 million over the weekend for a total of $14.2 million.

"17 Again" was the one sophomore holdout, staying strong at #2 with $11.7 million, bringing its total gross to $40 million. "State of Play" and "Crank: High Voltage" had a steeper drop, falling to #7 and #10 respectively, while the five-week champion "Monsters vs. Aliens" just barely slid to #6 with another $8.5 million.

Overall, the box office is starting the spring season out on a high note with $114 million and a total of $1.1 billion, 20 percent higher than spring 2008. The past five weekends have seen the industry break records and outdo itself, boding well for the summer blockbuster season.

Upcoming Releases

Fox's "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" kick-starts summer on May 1, alongside Lionsgate's animated "Battle for Terra" and the romantic comedy "Ghosts of Girlfriends Past" from Warner Bros.
