For anybody who thought Katy Perry's pastor parents didn't understand the rebellious attitude evidenced in songs like "I Kissed a Girl" and "Ur So Gay," the Grammy nominee is letting everyone know that long before they were preaching to the choir, they were hanging out with rock stars and counter-culture icons.
"She went on a date [with Jimi Hendrix]," Perry jokingly told Katie Couric about her mom during Couric's Grammy special, "All Access," airing Wednesday night (February 4) and also featuring Taylor Swift, Lil Wayne and Justin Timberlake. "[My dad] was a part of Strawberry Fields Forever [and hung out with Timothy Leary]."
She went on to explain that despite her current status as a hot-pants-wearing pop-star, she promises that her parents have acquired tales that far exceed hers. "My parents have stories. They probably have better stories than I do," she said after she showed Couric around backstage at one of her concerts. "And they found God. They needed to find God. Not that they needed to find God, but God found them, really."
Couric pointed out that growing up with her preacher parents meant that she often spoke in tongues, channeling messages from God — which Couric added is a Pentecostal practice. "It's exactly that," Perry, who will be performing at the show on Sunday, explained. "There was a movie called 'Jesus Camp,' and I watched it and I went, 'Oh my gosh! I didn't know they had behind-the-scenes footage of my childhood!' "
Will Lil Wayne grab all the gramophones? Is Katy Perry going to tell her girl rivals to kiss off? Can Coldplay march off with a win? MTV News is all over the 51st Annual Grammy Awards, so stay tuned for interviews, analysis and more before, during and after the big night, Sunday, February 8.
