BEVERLY HILLS, California — Sitting at home on your couch, you saw
"They are blotting papers," Winslet explained in the press room, moments after winning her first Globe for
And perhaps because she had no further expectations, Winslet gave a far more spontaneous speech for her
Onstage, Rourke's Best Actor speech gave a shout-out to his dogs. Backstage, he showed off the hardware that pays tribute to them. "Yeah, I have all their names on my ring," he grinned. "There's Mowjack the Great. Then there was Angel, his wife and then a kid, Chocolate. ... There's Loki, named after the Nordic god of mischief, and then Knee-Knee."
On a far more serious note, "John Adams" producer Tom Hanks was eager to discuss some modern-day politics. "I think it is anti-American, Prop 8," the double-Oscar winner said of the bill that has banned gay marriage in the state. "In any given election in the state of California, you can put some commercials on the air and convince [the voters] of anything. But it won't last. Fear not; this is America. We are going to be OK, and we are going to do the right thing."
Asked for his coolest moment of the night, Tracy Morgan gave a typically unpredictable answer. "I shook hands with Tom Cruise during a commercial," the "30 Rock" star grinned. "Cool stuff!"
And for the dirtiest moment of the night, Ricky Gervais clued us in on the off-color Holocaust joke he barely held back while onstage. "I was going to say that when I got the DVD for 'Schindler's List', one critic said, 'You should have a box of tissues ready,' " he smiled coyly. "And I was going to say, 'That sounds a bit sick!"
For sheer infectious joy, however, it was hard to beat Best Actress (Musical or Comedy) winner Sally Hawkins, a new Hollywood star who was "Happy-Go-Lucky" in more ways than one. "I think I said too much; it exploded my head, to say the least," the 32-year-old British actress said of her win. Asked what Meryl Streep screamed to her on her way towards the stage, Hawkins revealed: "She said, 'Are you happy now?' And no, I had never met her before. But yes, Meryl, I am happy!"
