HOLLYWOOD — Fans and friends welcomed DJ AM home Tuesday night with a party at the Avalon. It marked the DJ's first official appearance since surviving a plane crash, along with Travis Barker, last month.
The event, aptly titled "Welcome Home DJ AM," not only celebrated the DJ's safe return to Los Angeles, but also served as a fundraiser, with proceeds benefiting the memorial funds of Travis Barker's assistant, Chris "Lil Chris" Baker, and his bodyguard, Charles "Che" Still, both of whom died in the crash.
The venue was adorned with Shepard Fairey-inspired DJ AM posters, reminiscent of the iconic Obama "Hope" posters. Although doors opened at 10 p.m., the line outside still stretched down the block at midnight.
Inside the venue, about 1,500 partygoers enjoyed sets by Shwayze, Mix Master Mike, Mark Ronson and Steve Aoki. Shwayze's Cisco Adler, a longtime friend of AM's, told People magazine, "I've known him since we were kids. I just saw him for the first time [since the crash], and it was literally an amazing moment."
The stage was transformed into a large DJ booth, with multiple turntables for the night's musical acts. At one point, DJ AM even joined Mix Master Mike, helping him scratch as he started his set. For the rest of the evening, AM remained along the side stage with other VIPs, cheering on his friends and fellow DJs.
Although many celebrities attended — including Hilary Duff, Macy Gray and Black Eyed Peas' Will.I.Am and Apl.De.Ap — the night felt loose and unstructured, unlike the usual red-carpet fanfare and guest list of most Hollywood events. In fact, everyone attending the party (celebrities included) purchased tickets to get into the party, serving as donations to the memorial funds.
Large screens throughout the venue projected images of old-school graffiti art and sneakers — a nod to AM, who is a self-professed sneaker-head.
Aoki closed the night out with the last DJ set, ending the party at around 3 a.m.
DJ AM gave his first post-crash interview to People this week, telling the magazine he was "saved for a reason."
AM is set to make another appearance Wednesday night (October 15) in Hollywood with Jay-Z.
