Opinions are like ... noses. Everybody has one. And no two are exactly alike. No hip-hop project that MTV News has ever done has incited, irritated and enticed people as much as 2007's "Hottest MCs in the Game." The MTV Hip-Hop Brain Trust — the same crew that came up with the listing for Greatest Hip-Hop groups, albums and solo MCs in years past — was taken to task by many of you in the aftermath.

Fans and artists argued for months about the order of the top 10, and who did and didn't make the list. Lil Wayne came in at #1 after a hotly contested argument about whether T.I. should be in the position. Thousands of people responded online, and countless others have approached the Brain Trust members and various other MTV employees in person about the list. Well, with the game in constant flux, we couldn't let it get to the 12-month mark without sitting down again and starting from scratch to devise a brand-new list of Hottest MCs.

Just like last year, 2008's list will break down what's going on today — as in not now, but right now! We looked at the MCs' output since July 2007 (when the last list came out) and factored in their lyrics, flow, overall impact on the game and, once again, swagger.

Prior to convening, all nine Brain Trustees came up with their own lists, choosing who they felt were the MCs keeping things steamy these days. Once all nine lists were in, we mathematically tallied a master list. Each rapper got 10 points for every time they were ranked #1, nine points for #2 and so forth. Once that was accomplished, we sat down at the table and expressed ourselves with raised voices. Keep in mind, just because somebody got enough points to be on the master list originally, didn't mean he or she couldn't be voted off and replaced with MCs from outside the mathematical top 10. Others were also susceptible to rising or falling within the list. It was anarchy at its zenith. Our list is not perfect, and we do not claim it to be definitive. We simply love hip-hop, as well as the conversations this kind of project can spark.
