T.I. was already in the hot seat after his October arrest for allegedly attempting to purchase unregistered machine guns and silencers, and on Monday (November 26), federal prosecutors turned up the heat on the rapper by filing a document claiming the convicted felon previously broke the law by possessing illegal firearms.
Prosecutors plan to introduce the evidence in T.I.'s pending federal case.
In the notice, processed in the U.S. District Court in Atlanta, T.I. is accused of handling unregistered weapons on three separate occasions; each time the rapper was not convicted to the full extent of the law, The Associated Press reports. In the United States, it is a violation of federal law for a convicted felon to have another person obtain guns on his or her behalf.
According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, the first instance in which T.I. illegally possessed a gun occurred in his native Atlanta on December 22, 2001, when he was arrested and allegedly told authorities his name was Douglas Morgan rather than his birth name of Clifford Harris. He was not convicted.
T.I. was also arrested in Georgia on November 1, 2002, and convicted in the case for carrying a 10mm pistol. The third arrest, according to the document, was after a search warrant was granted for the rapper's home on December 18, 2004, and police discovered a silencer-enhanced weapon, loads of ammunition and photos of T.I. handling guns.
T.I. is under house arrest after posting a $3 million bond that also imposed several provisions on the rapper, including limiting the number of visitors to his home and requiring him to submit to random drug screenings.
Federal agents arrested T.I. on October 13 several hours prior to the BET Hip Hop Awards, where the rapper was scheduled to perform and received several honors. Agents claimed T.I. illegally purchased and obtained a number of firearms through a deal made on his behalf by a bodyguard, who was also arrested in the sting.
