We all knew "American Idol" was going off script this week ... big stars, big performances, all of it for a big cause. But we never expected this.
Yes, we knew our finalists would get up and do what they do best — Melinda soared, Jordin roared, you know the drill (and if you don't, check out our look back at Tuesday night's show: "'Idol' Recap: LaKisha Makes A Mess Of Fantasia's Anthem; Blake Plays It Too Safe"). Chris did Clapton, Blake brought Lennon, Phil stayed with country and LaKisha tried to channel Fantasia ... business as usual, right?
But Simon and Ryan road-tripping to Africa? Celine dueting with a departed Elvis? Endless corporate plugs? And the kicker — NO ELIMINATION? Yup, after 70 million votes, everybody stays (see " 'Idol' Serves Up Charity-Night 'Shocker': Everyone Stays").
All of it got us wondering, did "American Idol" finally go where so many have gone before? Did "Idol" jump the shark? Yes, the show managed to raise $60 million for various charities (and undoubtedly raised awareness of global poverty issues). But our resident "Idol" expert Jim Cantiello thinks the show toyed with us too much this week. Check out his 60-second "American Idol" recap and tell us what you think (through the magic of You Tell Us) ... and everyone worried that Sanjaya would kill "Idol."
