Just in time for Valentine's Day, we asked the pros to weigh in on the tunes that set their hearts a-flutter. The secret to a heart-melting mixtape? Goth rock saps, punk rock forefathers, and Bryan Adams.
"I have loved that song since I was 5 years old. I used to sing that song until the record player would break. I was very shy when I was younger, and didn't like to sing, but [my parents] would make me sing that. I know Dolly Parton did it originally, but clearly Whitney Houston killed that one, in many different ways. I just want to say I cannot wait for Whitney to come back. It's coming, and I am waiting for that day."
"I always happen to be single on Valentine's Day."
James Mercer (singer/guitarist): "I would say something from The Cure's Disintegration."
Marty Crandall (keyboardist): "We were listening to that album a lot during the recording of Wincing the Night Away."
Mercer: "For atmosphere, mostly."
Crandall: "There's a lot of great love songs on there. But if I had to pick one it would be 'Pictures of You.' It's got so much depth, it conveys so many moods. It's sad but wistful. I love it."
"I think it's the first song that I ever kissed anyone to at a school dance when I was small. So cheesy."
"Something about those songs got this vibe that takes me there. I think I'mma put them on my MySpace page this Valentine's Day as something special for the girls."
"That was one of the best records Ginuwine ever did and my all-time favorite R&B record. The reason why is because I love the lyrics. He's talking about how his whole life done changed and the way he done changed for his woman. It's some deep sh*t. I can listen to it like, 'Damn, I can feel that.'"

"It reminds me of a time when I asked an ex-girlfriend out on Valentine's Day and a lot of people get married on Valentine's Day."
"It's about love and struggling, and making it [in life]. I always play it for my mom. I can remember this one Valentine's Day a few years ago, me and my mom was on the road all day. She was my valentine, and I was playing it for her all day. There were times in my life, when we lived in a single room - just me and my mom, and four other kids (my brothers and sisters) - and for me to be able to get her a house, and make sure she stopped working... It's just one of them songs I will never ever forget. I love that song."
Matt Johnson (singer/guitarist/keyboardist): "Valentine's Day's been kind of rough to us lately. We have bad luck playing shows on Valentine's Day."
Kim Schifino (singer/drummer): "We've only done one show on Valentine's Day."
Matt: "We're playing this Valentine's Day."
Kim: "I like to call Valentine's Day 'Vagina Day.'" [all laugh]
Kim: "'Cause there's so many people getting laid on Valentine's Day."
Matt: "There ya go.... So this is a song that I can connect to Valentine's Day? [ponders] Favorite love song?
Kim: "Okay, if I was to pick a favorite love song it would be 'F**k the World' by The Queers."
Matt: "How is that your favorite love song?"
Kim: [sings lyrics] "F**ck the world/ I'm hanging out with you tonight."
Kim: "Totally...that would be as close as I'm gonna get to a love song."
Matt: "Alright, I gotta hear that song."
Kim: "You totally know that song."
Matt: "Alright, maybe I do."
Kim: "OK, your turn. What song do you hear when you think of me?"
Matt: "Don't put me on the spot." [all laugh]
Kim: "You gotta answer."
Matt: "I'm not gonna answer that one. I have to think about it for a minute..."
"I'm a sucker for love songs, even if it's a sad love song. Like "In the Wee Small Hours..." is a gorgeous, gorgeous tune. There's a great McCartney song that no one ever talks about called "Warm and Beautiful." It's on the Wings At the Speed of Sound. When I met him in '96 we were having breakfast at his house, and I got up my nerve to ask him about it. He said "Where have I heard that before?" So I started singing it to him, and all of a sudden it came back to him and he jumped in. "Sunlight's morning glory tells a story..." A beautiful melody. And he wound up putting it on one of those classical albums, too. I love to write love songs - I have one called "Tomorrow In Her Eyes" that people have used as their weddings song.
