Keanu Reeves was back in the top box-office spot over the weekend, but it wasn't because of a miraculous rebirth of the final "Matrix" flick. Rather, he climbed atop the big-screen heap as a co-star in the Jack Nicholson/ Diane Keaton romance "Something's Gotta Give," which debuted at #1 over the weekend on the strength of a $17 million take, according to studio estimates.
Though not a blockbuster, the flick's ticket sales were enough to put it ahead of last week's top movie, Tom Cruise's "The Last Samurai," which shed more than 40 percent of its audience and fell a spot to #2 with $14 million, bringing its two-week total to just over $46 million. Despite generally positive reviews, the latest Farrelly brothers comedy, the conjoined-twins farce "Stuck on You" starring Matt Damon and Greg Kinnear, debuted at #3 with $10 million, followed by the Nick Cannon flick "Love Don't Cost a Thing," which brought in $6.5 million in its first week. Last week's #2 movie, "Honey," lost 60 percent of its audience and slid down to #8 on estimated grosses of $5 million. The season's break-out comedy hit, "Elf," took in $6.2 million, bringing its to-date total to $147 million after six weeks.
The bad news for Keanu came courtesy of "The Matrix Revolutions," as the final installment of the sci-fi trilogy had its worst week yet, dropping down to 15th place on $735,000 in grosses, as it shed another 45 percent of its audience and played in just 633 theaters. On the flip side, a limited-engagement re-release of "The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers" raked in $700,000 in just 126 theaters.
"Big Fish," the latest from director Tim Burton ("Edward Scissorhands"), debuted with impressive numbers in limited release in just six theaters, grossing $215,000, or $35,833 per screen, nearly 10 times as much per screen as all but one of the top-10 movies.
Rounding out the top 10 are "The Haunted Mansion" at #5 with $6.3 million; "Bad Santa" at #6 with $6.2 million; "The Cat in the Hat" at #9 with $4.2 million and "Gothika" at #10 with $2.7 million. Overall, the weekend's take was down eight percent from the same period last week.
The slow weekend at the multiplex will be short-lived, as this week brings the Wednesday opening of the final installment of "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy, "The Return of the King." Opening on Friday are a number of other heavily hyped holiday films, including the Julia Roberts ensemble drama "Mona Lisa Smile," the Nicole Kidman Civil War film "Cold Mountain" and the Ben Affleck thriller "Paycheck."
