Poor little Lizzie McGuire — Wolverine and the rest of the mutant crew sent teen queen Hilary Duff's movie ducking for cover over the weekend, as "X2: X-Men United" topped the box office with an $85.8 million haul.
The sequel to the 2000 blockbuster original now holds the record for the fourth largest opening ever, behind the "Harry Potter" movies and another Marvel Comics hero, "Spider-Man." (Click to see "X2: X-Men United" photos.)
"X2"'s showing all but solidifies plans to move ahead with an "X3." Rebecca Romijn-Stamos (Mystique) and Alan Cumming (Nightcrawler) are already signed on, and Hugh Jackman (Wolverine) and director Bryan Singer have expressed interest in returning, as has James Marsden (Cyclops).
"I think if it's 'X-Men 3' and it's the same kind of nice chemistry that we've got going since the first movie with the cast and Bryan Singer and all those elements, if those fall into place, then I'd be much more obliged to be a part of it," Marsden said. "I think it is inevitable."
"The Lizzie McGuire Movie," the only film brave enough to open against "X2," didn't stand a chance against the first of Hollywood's summer sequels, but it did manage to land at #2 with a sizable $17 million. (Click to see "The Lizzie McGuire Movie" photos.)
The rest of the weekend's top 10, according to studio estimates, includes last week's #1 film, "Identity," at #3 with $9.5 million ($30.2 million, two weeks); "Anger Management" at #4 with $8.5 million ($115.4 million, four weeks); "Holes" at #5 with $6.5 million ($45 million, three weeks); "Malibu's Most Wanted" at #6 with $4 million ($28.9 million, three weeks); "Confidence" at #7 with $2.5 million ($8 million, two weeks); "It Runs in the Family" at #8 with $1.5 million ($5.1 million, two weeks); "Bend It Like Beckham" at #9 with $1.4 million ($10.9 million, eight weeks); and "Bulletproof Monk" at #10 with $1.4 million ($21.5 million, three weeks).
That "Bend It" managed to crack the top 10 is remarkable in that the critically acclaimed indie flick is only playing in 484 theaters. By comparison, "X2" could be seen in 3,741 places.
