John Kander and Fred Ebb, the writers behind the Broadway hits "Cabaret" and "Chicago," are basically the Lennon and McCartney of musicals. So Janet Jackson shouldn't feel bad about the duo replacing her on the soundtrack to the new "Chicago" movie.
Jackson and producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis wrote and recorded a song to be featured during the end credits and on the soundtrack of the movie (see "Janet Jackson To Appear On LP With Mya ... And Richard Gere"), but the producers decided at the last minute to instead use a new composition from Kander and Ebb, according to a Miramax spokesperson.
The new Kander and Ebb song, titled "I Move On," was recorded recently by the film's stars, Catherine Zeta-Jones (who plays Velma Kelly) and Renée Zellweger (Roxie Hart).
While the rest of the compositions in the movie are from the original "Chicago" musical, Miramax wanted one new song that would be eligible to compete for an Oscar.
The soundtrack, due January 14, will feature all the songs in the movie performed by the stars (including Richard Gere), along with Anastacia's take on "Love Is a Crime" and a hip-hop interpretation of "Cell Block Tango" by Queen Latifah, Lil' Kim and Macy Gray. Composer Danny Elfman also contributed two numbers, "After Midnight" and "Roxie's Suite."
"Chicago," released in select cities December 27 and scheduled for wider release this month, will stay true to the Broadway version's story, which centers on a lawyer (Gere) defending a wannabe celebrity (Zellweger) and the real thing (Zeta-Jones).
Latifah, Mya (see "Mya To Take Role In 'Chicago' Movie"), John C. Reilly ("The Perfect Storm") Taye Diggs ("The Best Man") and Lucy Liu ("Charlie's Angels") also star in the film, which Broadway veteran Rob Marshall ("Kiss of the Spider Woman," the "Cabaret" revival) directed.
"Chicago," choreographed by the late Bob Fosse, debuted on Broadway in 1975 and was revived in 1996 with a Tony-winning version featuring Bebe Neuwirth and others.
