R&B grandpas the Isley Brothers weren't kidding when they called their new album Eternal.
Nearly 50 years after the Isleys got together, they will have the highest-debuting album next week in a top 10 packed with debuts. With more than 225,000 copies sold, Eternal will slide in at #3, right behind 'NSYNC's Celebrity at #2 and Now That's What I Call Music!… Vol. 7 at #1.
Celebrity moved just under 244,000 units, and Now sold 394,000, according to SoundScan data released Wednesday (August 15).
Eternal includes the hit ballad "Contagious," with production work and vocals by R. Kelly. Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis (Janet Jackson) produced much of the rest of the album, which also includes guest appearances by Jill Scott and Raphael Saadiq (see "Isley Brothers Spring Eternal On Upcoming Album").
The Isley Brothers' career began in the '50s, when they wrote and recorded the much-covered classic "Shout." In the '60s they had a hit with "Twist and Shout," a song the Beatles later covered, and briefly played with a pre-fame Jimi Hendrix. The '70s and '80s saw the Cincinnati band with a shifting line-up incorporate funk and rock elements into their sound.
An R&B star of more recent vintage, Usher, will have next week's second-highest debut, landing at #4 with 8701, which includes the slow-jam hit "U Remind Me" (see "Usher Spends All Of 8/7/01 Celebrating 8701").
LOX rapper Jadakiss' Kiss Tha Game Goodbye, with production by Timbaland and Swizz Beatz, will land at #5 in its first week on the chart, and Aaron Carter's Oh Aaron will debut at #7.
The rest of the top 10 will be: Alicia Keys' Songs in A Minor at #6, Staind's Break the Cycle at #8, Linkin Park's Hybrid Theory at #9 and D12's Devils Night at #10.
Continuing its chart rebound, Jennifer Lopez's J. Lo will move up to #11, thanks to her "I'm Real" remix. Alien Ant Farm's ANThology, boosted by their cover of Michael Jackson's "Smooth Criminal," will jump to #12 (see "Alien Ant Farm Wrestle With Michael Jackson Hit").
With "American Pie 2" ruling movie theaters, its soundtrack boasting new music from American Hi-Fi, Uncle Kracker and Alien Ant Farm will leap from #58 to #26 next week.
