Jennifer Lopez won't take the stand in Sean "Puffy" Combs' trial on gun possession and bribery charges, but Combs will testify in his own defense, the former couple said Tuesday.
"As Sean will testify on his own behalf, he and his lawyers have decided at this time it is not necessary for me to testify," Lopez said in a joint statement released by Combs' publicist, according to the Associated Press. "I have told Sean that if he and his lawyers change their minds and require me to testify, I will be there immediately to tell the truth." Combs said that because he plans to testify himself, "it is no longer necessary for Jennifer to be involved," according to the wire service.
Lopez's testimony was a much-discussed prospect even before Combs' trial began, but few observers predicted that Combs himself might testify.
Judge Charles Solomon may have laid the groundwork for Combs' testimony, however, with a recent ruling that prosecutor Matthew Bogdanos could not ask Combs about most of his prior run-ins with the law.
Tuesday's statement did not say when Combs might take the stand, but his lawyer, Benjamin Brafman, has said he expects to finish presenting his case on Friday. Lopez and Combs were at Club New York together early in the morning on December 27, 1999, when the shootings that sparked the case took place.
