With all the hoopla surrounding the planned duet between Eminem and Elton John, it was easy not to notice that, until Wednesday (February 14), the Grammys still didn't have a host.
The announcement was made on the official Grammy Web site that comedian Jon Stewart of "The Daily Show" will host the show. The news came with only a week to go before the February 21 ceremony, to be held at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.
No reason was given for the late announcement. Awards show hosts generally are chosen several weeks before the event for instance, on Tuesday it was announced that Steve Martin will host the March 25 Academy Awards ceremony.
The dry-witted, self-deprecating Stewart has appeared in the films "Big Daddy" and "The Faculty," and is currently shooting "Death to Smoochy," directed by Danny DeVito. In addition to the nightly news parody "The Daily Show," Stewart also hosted such shows as MTV's "You Wrote It, You Watch It" and "The Jon Stewart Show." In addition to the Eminem-John duet on the rapper's "Stan," Christina Aguilera, Destiny's Child, 'NSYNC, Paul Simon and Moby are scheduled to perform on the telecast.
Rosie O'Donnell hosted last year's awards, viewed by nearly 17 million households.
