Producer Roni Size and his drum 'n' bass collective, Reprazent, will leave the samples at home when they take their acclaimed In the Mode album on the road in North America.
"We're 100 percent live, without a doubt, no strings attached," Size said of the groundbreaking 16-city tour that kicks off March 1 in Anaheim, California, and concludes with an unconfirmed performance at the annual Winter Music Conference in Miami. "It's great. We're so in tune with each other onstage. Everyone needs to be because it's so complicated." Size debuted the eight-member Reprazent rapper Dynamite MC, singer Onallee, producers Krust, Suv and Die, bassist Si John, and drummer Rob Merrill at Central Park Summer Stage in August, but said their spring tour will be new and improved.
"Last time there were a few things we had to tighten up," he said. "We worked on the arrangements and drums and just made sure everybody was in tune with each other. Now everyone has their role. All the breaks from the record are emphasized with snares and kicks. I'm playing all the digital fills. Krust plays the strings. Suv plays all the effects. Dynamite and Onallee back each other up." October's In the Mode, the follow-up to 1997's Mercury Music Prize-winning New Forms, is a more lyrical and musical album than its double-album predecessor, thanks in part to guest appearances by former Rage Against the Machine singer Zach de la Rocha, Method Man and Rahzel of the Roots.
Size hails from Bristol, England, and is one of the U.K.'s most prominent electronic-music producers, known for his mix of hard beats, jazzy vocals and world beat references. He said he included less samples and more layered instrumentation on In the Mode to amplify the group's live performance.
"I wanted to make sure that first and foremost the record worked onstage," Size said.
