They're not calling it the year of the woman yet. But two divas and a diva-in-training dominate the nominees for the 1999 American Music Awards. Whitney Houston, Shania Twain and teen phenom Britney Spears all received three nominations.
Only one of them, however, will walk away with the Favorite Female Pop/Rock Artist. It's the one award for which all three were nominated.
Whitney Houston was nominated for favorite female Soul/R&B artist and favorite Soul/R&B album for My Love Is Your Love. She faces competition in the first category from award veteran Lauryn Hill and Brandy. Lauryn Hill's Miseducation is also a nominee for favorite Soul/R&B album with TLC's Fanmail.
Shania Twain straddles two different categories. The Canadian with the drafty wardrobe is a nominee for Favorite Adult Contemporary Artist with fellow diva Cher and Phil Collins. She might also be our Favorite Female Country Artist - unless the award goes to Faith Hill or Martina McBride.
Shania will be hoping that her performance at the awards is an improvement on last year's. Although she was nominated for five awards in 1998, Shania walked away from the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles this January with only one.
Britney Spears' ... Baby One More Time is nominated for Favorite Pop/Rock Album along with her sales rivals the Backstreet Boys' Millennium and Santana's miraculous comeback LP Supernatural. Britney was also nominated for Favorite New Pop/Rock Artist, although the title might go to Jennifer Lopez or Kid Rock.
The winners of the AMAs are determined by a poll taken from around 20,000 music consumers. The award ceremony was the brainchild of Dick Clark, who appeared with Carmen Electra and Norm Macdonald to announce the nominees in Los Angeles on Monday.
Another closely-watched category will be the Favorite Latin Artist. Who will win? Hip-swiveling Ricky Martin? Billion-dollar bod Jennifer Lopez? Or professional virgin Enrique Iglesias?
All will be revealed - and Jennifer Lopez, 'N Sync and country pardners Brooks & Dunn will all perform - on Monday, January 27 at 8p/7c on ABC.
