Jan. 6 [16:00 EST] -- Workaholic Mike Watt, currently on tour with Porno For Pyros, has also completed work on the first release from banyan, his new side project. The latest endeavor from the bassist features Pyros drummer Stephen Perkins, keyboardist Money Mark, and guitarist Nels Cline, and will release its self-titled debut album in mid-April.
The record, currently being mixed by the Dust Brothers, sees Watt venture into an "experimental, very different" direction, according to a spokesperson for Higher Octave Records (who will release the album). During the recording sessions, the band donned headphones and listened to Stravinsky, and then began jamming to it, an album that has "very ambient moments, and then it has techno moments," according to the label.
Next, Watt will team up with drummer Steve Hodges (who worked with Tom Waits), and Nels Cline to begin work on yet another project. While sessions have not yet begun for this band, Watt has already dubbed this unnamed group "the return of the power trio."
