August 29 [16:00 EDT] -- Fans who missed the live version of the Squirrel Nut Zippers hot jazz during the band's recent stint on the H.O.R.D.E. tour may want to check out a new limited-edition six-song EP due to hit stores next week.
The release, titled "Sold Out," features a handful of live performances, as well as previously unreleased studio recordings, including a track from the band's second-ever practice.
If you think you're familiar with "La Grippe," you might be surprised by what you hear on the EP, as the band says it's fond of mixing things up during its shows.
"We play clams all the time, every night," drummer Chris Philips told MTV news. "We're some of the worst players you'll ever meet," he joked.
"We just don't play the same song the same way twice, and we love it," vocalist/guitarist Tom Maxwell added. I think that's where the jazz element comes in with us in that kind of improvisation."
Meanwhile, Zippers vocalist Jimbo Mathus pays tribute to late Delta blues legend Charley Patton on "Songs For Rosetta." Recorded under the name Jas Mathus and His Knock Down Society, the album will benefit Patton's daughter Rosetta, whose late father (like so many blues musicians of the 20s) never got his fair share of royalties.
That release, featuring 14 traditional blues-style tracks like "Diggin' My Potatoes," "Memphis Bound," and "Who'll Sop My Gravy," will arrive in stores on October 7.
