One of the new releases arriving in music stores this week is Silverchair's third album, "Neon Ballroom," a record that has already debuted (as expected) at number one in the trio's Australian homeland.
Silverchair stopped by MTV's Times Square studios recently to discuss its new album, which frontman Daniel Johns says makes an obvious lyrical jump in maturity from that of the group's previous two records, 1995's "Frogstomp" and 1997's "Freak Show." "With the previous two albums," Johns said, "the lyrics were very focused on the anger I was feeling towards certain groups and sub-cultures and people. And with this album, musically and lyrically, I just wanted to do something that people wouldn't expect, so I really just focused on things that I was feeling about myself, and psychological issues, and lyrically, it's a lot deeper and means a bit more to me." [28.8 RealVideo] Silverchair is pushing "Anthem for the Year 2000" as the first single from "Neon Ballroom," and the band is presently in the midst of a three week North American tour, expected to conclude on April 1 at the House of Blues in Los Angeles. In related news, "Burning London," the oft-delayed Clash tribute album to which Silverchair has contributed a cover of "London's Burning," has had its release date pushed back one again. "Burning London" was due out today, but has now been delayed by Epic Records until mid-May.
