British acid house rockers Primal Scream are set to return to American record stores this week with "Exterminator," the group's long-awaited follow-up to 1997's critically hailed "Vanishing Point."

For much of "Exterminator," Primal Scream traded in the dance floor for a bully pulpit and responded to what it views as the social wasteland created in Europe and the Middle East by two decades of conservative leaders in the U.K. and U.S. (see "Primal Scream Gets Political For Exterminator").

"Kill All Hippies" is the first American single from the album, and the track opens with an audio snippet from the 1980 Dennis Hopper cult classic, "Out Of The Blue," which stars Linda Manz as the child of a convict biker (Hopper) and a junkie mother.

Primal Scream frontman Bobby Gillespie recently talked with MTV News about why they decided to use the sample, which he believes helps put the dark and aggressive political tone of "Exterminator" into context.

"Back in '86-'87, I first saw that movie, and it was a real favorite of mine," Gillespie said, "and I think it's a really poignant, beautiful film. It's always been a favorite movie of ours, of the band's. We love Dennis Hopper and we love Linda Manz, the girl who plays C.B., the main character in the film.

"So we just thought it was a great thing to sample, you know, her saying, 'Subvert normality, Punk is not sexual, punk is aggression. 10-4 old buddies. Destroy. Kill all hippies. Disco sucks.' We just thought it was cool." [RealVideo]

On May 26, Primal Scream will kick off its first headlining North American tour in almost eight years, starting in Washington, D.C. and continuing through a June 10 show in San Francisco (see "Primal Scream Lines Up U.S. 'Exterminator' Tour").
