Alanis Morissette wrapped up a sold out two week appearance in The Vagina Monologues last Sunday in New York City, an extraordinary show based on thousands of actual interviews with women of many ages, nationalities, and backgrounds, candidly discussing their... vaginas.
In turns hilarious, poignant, disturbing and outrageous, Morissette (along with actresses Shirley Knight and Andrea Martin) presented monologues on such topics as "if your vagina could talk, what would it say," "reclaiming the 'C' word," and other such madness. There were also more sobering monologues, including Morissette's absolutely brilliant first-person portrayal of a young Muslim girl from Kosovo, describing herself before and after being gang raped by soldiers. The Westside Theater's 250 seats provided Alanis fans (who constituted the bulk of the audience) with the rare opportunity to see her perform up close and most intimately (not one second of any aspect of this show is anything BUT intimate).
The show has been running since October of last year, and on April 18th Claire Danes will join the cast.
