Megadeth will release a best-of album with two new tracks on its current label, Capitol Records, though the group is officially looking for another home for its new studio project.
Bandleader Dave Mustaine posted a note on the megadeth.com message board confirming that the group asked for and was granted a release from Capitol, along with permission to take the band's just-completed album of fresh material elsewhere.
Although Mustaine alluded to not being happy with the mastering job done on the band's new album, nor with numerous hierarchy changes at the label during the group's nine-album tenure, his post indicated the split has been amicable thus far.
Megadeth, with tongue firmly in cheek, had planned on calling its new studio album "Capitol Punishment" but decided against it. Oddly enough, the greatest-hits package is likely to retain that moniker. One of the two new tracks is called "Kill The King," and the other title is yet to be determined.
Once the band finds a label, it will go back into the studio to record tracks to replace the two that will be included on the Capitol compilation, Mustaine wrote. He indicated that he expects the new recording and signing process to take around six months. The release should still be timely, as the band's last album, "Risk," was issued late last August.
The band recorded most of its new LP prior to embarking on the Maximum Rock tour with Mötley Crüe and Anthrax in late June (see "Megadeth Plans New Album, Mötley Crüe Tour"). In the midst of the tour, the group undertook additional remixing sessions and delivered the album to Capitol on July 5. Five days later, the group's attorney and manager informed the label of Megadeth's wishes to depart, according to Mustaine.
