Avant-jazz maestro John Lurie is going fishing with a few friends, including Tom Waits, Matt Dillon, and Dennis Hopper, and is documenting those journeys for any and all curious cable subscribers.
Lurie serves as the host of the Independent Film Channel's "Fishing With John," a far cry from "Fishing With Orlando Wilson." The series debut on June 15 found Lurie shark fishing off Long Island with filmmaker Jim Jarmusch, and followed that up this week with a red snapper excursion in Jamaica with gravel-voiced Beat crooner Tom Waits (who winds up seasick and grumbling).
In future episodes, Lurie and Matt Dillon learn the ritual dance of Costa Rican fisherman, Willem DaFoe runs out of cheese crackers while ice fishing in Maine, and Dennis Hopper joins in to search for a 59-foot giant squid in Thailand.
Users who visit the official "Fishing With John" website (at the Independent Film Channel's site at http://www.ifctv.com) can also register to win a CD of music Lurie composed for the show.Lurie should be no stranger to the independent film world having acted in "Down By Law," "Mystery Train," "Blue In The Face," and "Smoke" among others. More mainstream audiences may have seen him in "Desperately Seeking Susan," "Batman," "Wild At Heart," or "The Last Temptation Of Christ."
