The long-discussed movie of the life story of 60s blues-rock legend Janis Joplin might finally make it to the big screen.

According to the "Hollywood Reporter," actress Brittany Murphy (who played Alicia Silverstone's geeky friend Tai in the movie "Clueless") has been cast to play Joplin in "Piece of My Heart" from Lakeshore Entertainment and Paramount Pictures.

This film is not the authorized version proposed by Joplin's family. That script, based on Joplin's sister's book "Love, Janis," was slated to star Lili Taylor, but Tri-Star has since put the project in turnaround. Melissa Etheridge and Emily Watson of "Hilary and Jackie" were among others considered to play the singer, who died at age 27 of a heroin overdose.
