Hutchence was close friends with U2's Bono, who also paid tribute to him earlier in the week at the U2 show in Melbourne. He told the crowd that he would like to "kick his ass" for what Hutchence did to himself and the band performed the song "One" in his honor. They followed with "Wake Up Dead Man," which included an image of Hutchence on their giant video screen. The image remained as U2 left the stage and Nick Cave's "Into My Arms" was piped through the sound system.

Oasis are also touring Australia, but don't expect the Brit bad boys to show up at a Hutchence tribute unless its to make amends. Liam Gallagher once publicly called Hutchence a "has-been" at an awards show in England.

Meanwhile, an investigative report in Sydney's "Morning Herald" is calling into question the state of Hutchence's finances at the time of his death. The paper reports that a list of his assets indicates Hutchence died practically bankrupt and fails to include all the property the singer was assumed to have purchased, including his homes, as well as his royalty credits for the band's material.

In other U2 news, the band has just added a date in South Africa to their soon-to-end Pop Mart tour. They play Cape Town March 16. The tour wraps up five days later in Johannesburg.
