Courtney Love will take a literary spin for her next film, as the Hole frontwoman has been cast as Joan Vollmer Adams, the common-law wife of "Naked Lunch" author, beat legend, and heroin addict William S. Burroughs, in an upcoming indie film, "Beat."
The movie focuses on Adams pre-Burroughs romance with Beat philosopher Lucien Carr, who will be played by Norman Reedus. The film is expected to start shooting on July 26 in Mexico City. Despite the film's relatively close start date, Hole is still expected to play two previously announced Lilith Fair shows in mid-August (see "Hole To Play A Pair Of Lilith Dates"). On a biographical note, William Burroughs, who died in 1997, accidentally killed Joan in 1951 when he attempted to shoot a glass off her head, William Tell-style. A dramatized account of that incident was a central part of the 1991 David Cronenberg film "Naked Lunch," in which actress Judy Davis portrayed the fictionalized role of "Joan." Burroughs also recorded an album, "The 'Priest' They Called Him," in 1992 with Love's late husband, Kurt Cobain. Love will next appear onscreen alongside Jim Carrey in the Andy Kaufman biopic, "Man on the Moon," due out on November 5.
