Green Day has hired a private investigator to look into an incident that happened backstage at the annual KROQ Weenie Roast last month and left the band's bassist with a fractured skull.
As we reported last month (see "Green Day/Third Eye Blind Skirmish Results In Skull Fracture, Canceled Concerts"), bassist Mike Dirnt was briefly hospitalized for a skull fracture after being hit in the head with a beer bottle during an argument with Third Eye Blind bassist Arion Salazar. According to radio reports at the time, Salazar struck Dirnt with the bottle, but the Third Eye Blind camp claims that it was in fact an unidentified fan who hit Dirnt.
The seed of the argument was planted earlier in the day when Salazar took to the stage during Green Day's set and wrapped a bear hug around Dirnt.
Since the day of the show, Third Eye Blind had been apologetic about the incident, with Salazar saying, "I am sorry that my attempt at doing something I thought would be funny escalated into Mike getting hurt."
Green Day's camp, for its part, has been tight-lipped about the incident.
