After an extended absence from the pop music scene, Filter has returned to the charts with a new LP, "Title of Record," which will debut at number 30 on next week's "Billboard Album" charts, thanks to the first single and video for "Welcome to the Fold."

"Title of Record" comes almost four years after the Richard Patrick-fronted outfit issued its debut album, "Short Bus," and many of the band's fans had wondered what had become of Filter during the interim -- and what was taking so long in delivering album number two.

In a recent interview with MTV News, Patrick explained that the recording delay was caused by his desire to construct his own studio facility in Chicago, a point which he made adamantly clear to Filter's label.

"The initial goal was to a record that was absolutely undeniable, because the kids have waited three years," Patrick said.

"I told the record company," he added, "I told my managers that. I said, 'Listen, I'm building this studio whether you like it or not, and I'm not gonna get shacked up in a [studio] like this for creativity."

"I love environments where it's really technical,"
Patrick continued, "but when you're creating and when you're writing a record, it's important to [be able to] run around at 3:00 a.m., just dragging the microphone behind you and just getting into trouble and doing things that are free. Without your own place to do it in, you're kind of inhibited." [RealVideo]

Filter will play a brief European tour from September 8 to 16, then fly back to the States to hook up with Limp Bizkit, DMX, Crystal Method, and Staind for the opening of the Family Values Tour on September 21 in Pittsburgh.
