Everclear has issued a statement clarifying the events that led to assault charges being filed against two members of the band.
As we reported on Tuesday, frontman Art Alexakis was charged with Simple Assault by Contact and touring guitarist Brian Lehfeldt was charged with Assault with Injury stemming from a promotional show the band played at the Music Hall in Austin on July 31 (see "Two Everclear Members Face Assault Charges In Texas"). The band confirms reports in the Texas media that the show was fraught with projectiles from the first song on. According to the statement, after being hit twice by objects, Alexakis warned the crowd to cease and desist, but following his request, a glass of liquid was thrown from the audience, striking him in the face. The band contends that Alexakis was hurt, so the group ceased playing and left the stage. A few minutes later, security informed the band that a young woman had confessed to throwing the object. According to the statement, the woman apparently had fessed up at the urging of the audience, so that the show could continue, although reports in the Austin media have said that she was not the one responsible. The group returned to the stage to resume its set as the woman was being taken out of the hall by security. As she neared the stage area, she began "screaming, cursing and spitting" at Alexakis and the band. The band's statement reads, "A member of the band's touring crew, agitated by this woman's behavior, poured water on her. She grabbed his leg and tried to pull him off the stage. He pulled his leg free, pushing her away." The woman was ejected from the venue by security, the statement continues, at which point she called police, who interviewed witnesses and determined the woman obtained no injuries and that there was no wrongdoing on the part of the band. The statement adds that the band is not aware of any criminal charges filed against them. Projectile-related circumstances also caused Mötley Crüe to cut short its set in Bakersfield, California this past weekend. After just five songs, singer Vince Neil was hit in the throat by a tequila bottle tossed from the crowd, and he was tended to by paramedics backstage. According to a post from Nikki Sixx on the band's official Web site, Neil was initially barely able to speak, much less sing, and that caused the cancellation. The incident also put in doubt the following night's concert in Fresno, but Neil recovered in time and the performance went ahead as scheduled.
