Outkast, De La Soul, and KRS-One are among a host of rap artists who will join the group Black Star to record a posse cut in response to the February shooting death of twenty-two-year-old West African immigrant Amadou Diallo by four New York police officers.
The as-yet-untitled cut will be recorded on April 23 and will benefit anti-violence organizations working to curb police brutality. Diallo was shot and killed when police fired 41 bullets on him as he entered his apartment building in the Bronx. Cops say they thought Diallo was reaching for a gun, but the man was found to be unarmed. The case has spawned an outcry against police brutality not unlike that which followed the 1991 beating of black motorist Rodney King by L.A. police. The single will be produced by Organized Noize, who produce Outkast and Goodie Mob. It is scheduled to be in stores on May 19.
