The on-again, off-again love story of Public Enemy and this summer's Smokin' Grooves tour looks to be on-again.
A spokesperson for House of Blues, the people behind Smokin' Grooves, told our colleagues in the MTV Radio Network that Public Enemy will be on-board when the tour kicks off later this summer, adding, "You can quote me on that." The spokesperson noted that the group's involvement was confirmed to her by the tour's booking agent, who said that the tour's itinerary was still being hammered out.
A PE insider confirmed that it looks promising that the group will announce within 48 hours that it will be headlining this summer's outing. If the group does indeed make that announcement, it will mark PE's first tour since the group began an unofficial four- year hiatus in 1994.
Public Enemy was initially announced as the part of the Smokin' Grooves tour in April along with Busta Rhymes, Canibus, Cypress Hill, Wyclef Jean, and Gang Starr (see "Public Enemy, Busta Rhymes, Wyclef On Board For Smokin' Grooves"). However, last week press representatives for PE balked at that assertion, saying that the group was not on the tour, and saying that it was highly likely that the group would not be touring at all this summer.
At the time, the manager of PE's Chuck D would only say "as of right now" the group was not on the tour.
A final announcement about this year's line-up and itinerary is expected this week.
