The second installment of the "Amp" album series arrives in stores on June 16, and fans of Public Enemy will want to check out Chuck D's contribution, "War, " a song which has the rapper bringing in a new style.
For "War," Chuck D merges his lyrical flow with that of vocalist Ambersunshower over a straight drum-n-bass track from New York-based producer Ticc Tacc of Quarantine Inc.
The drum-n-bass brainchild of record exec Andrew Goldstone and Phil Nelson, a close confidant of Chuck D and P.E., both Nelson and D viewed the segue from hip hop into electronica as indicative of Enemy's willingness to experiment.
"Public Enemy has always been an aggressive force in music," Nelson explained to the MTV Radio Network. "After hearing so many drum-n-bass samples using Chuck D's voice, we figured it was about time we made our own statement."
"Once again," added Chuck D, "regardless of what anybody thinks, pushing the musical envelope is what hip hop is all about. It's about making the unpopular move as much as it is the popular move. We'll see."
The "Amp 2" album also features cuts from Method Man, the Jungle Brothers and Goldie, featuring KRS-One. Chuck D is also in talks to work with the Chemical Brothers for their next album.
